HOW TO RECOGNIZE YOURSELF

How to Recognize Yourself

In somewhat of a hurry, she quickens her steps. Her eyes shift right as her side vision catches a glimpse of scurried movement in a store window. In what seems like a nanosecond, her eyes are looking ahead of her again. Just like that, her pace slows drastically, as her eyes again shift right in a nearly imperceivable attempt to pull themselves together. “No,” they try to convince themselves, “that is not her. That is not us.” She allows herself to come to a full stop. She turns to face the window, to stare into those eyes that betray her. The woman staring back at her has sparse brows, and even sparser lips. Her shoulders droop, negating the fact that she feels erect. Her upper arms sag. She wears sensible shoes. She doesn’t know what the big hurry was.

Eyes search for signs of
former beauty. Christ reminds
us, we are His bride.

A CORD OF THREE STRANDS

memo board

They began, young.

Lovely and in love
Healthy and hopeful
Playful and promising
To have and to hold
From this day

Forward, fast
Furiously fading
As Alzheimer’s attempts
To dilute and damage
Life and love
Strongly seduced.

Still,
Promise prevailed.
“All my love, and love me always”
In illness and health,
Held by God’s hands
And the cord of three strands,
Stands

Against all
Ashes to ashes
Forever co-mingled
In the perpetual presence
Of the One who,
Singly, and synchronously,
Breathed life
And an always love.

“And if someone overpowers one person, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not easily broken.”  ~ Ecclesiastes 4:12

Forever my love to Mom and Dad, now eternally at rest, in the presence of the One.

I Am An Aging, Living Being

aging-2379003_640

No longer vibrant
smooth
-skinned strength, framed
on the nightstand

No longer quick
-witted or
-stepped
fluid in mind
agile in stride

No longer resourceful
proficient
a step ahead
with a head in the game

At times still life,
I am life, still

I am aging

living

being.

Empty nest

Egg, emptied

Spent on health

Caring not

Whether they

Lose their nest

What matters

Is breathing

Each other

Could we respect our elderly,
Our mentally
Unwell and worn;
Our foreign-born?

Opinions that oppose our views?
Please let’s not choose
To denigrate.
Let’s celebrate

Divergences.  Let’s love despite;
And so ignite
A shared esteem –
A common dream.
