Senryu for Autumn’s Hills, 2014

by Marie Elena

hills

I.

The drone of demands

Briefly switched with hushed stillness

As leaves fall like snow

II.

Horns, sirens, red lights

Renounced for crimson-dappled

Pine needle footpaths

III.

Here, silence is found

Not in lack of sound, but in

Raindrops on crisp leaves.

IV.

Crickets and songbirds

Harmonize with the tall pines,

Singing as they sway.

V.

Cabin-bound evening

As fierce autumn storms descend,

But can’t dampen joy.

VI.

Unseasonal warmth

Gives way to plummeting temps.

Two hearts find kindling.

VII.

Sizzling bacon

Crackling fire in the hearth

Savoring morning

VIII.

In vain, camera’s eye

Tries to mimic that which is

Creator-endowed

IX.

Sun warms exposed skin

As chilled air caresses same.

Season of wonder.

X.

Grateful for God’s gifts

As autumn’s palette fades, and

Our road now leads home
